We pretty much go here twice a week: Tuesday for Dosa night and once on the weekend for The Grand Buffet. On dosa night, fresh dosas are made to order with assorted veg and meat fillings. Personal favorites are Spring and Mysore masala. Make sure to get some coconut chutney with your dosa for an authentic indian meal. I love the Sambar, a spicy lentil veggie stew. There are always plenty of options for vegetarians. And the chef is adventurous, constantly churning out new dishes. Another star here is the attentive service. Those guys work so hard. Tell them Stephanie and Ryan say hey!

So this review may be colored by coming in for a late lunch. And unfortunately living in the Bay Area. I had a late lunch say 1pm, there is no one in the restaurant and the food while looks good, it was very bland. So starting off the rice is short grain and was over cooked. I very much wish for long grain basmati rice. The over cooked rice sat out too long. Their were some interesting side dishes, mostly fried and they were ok. The chicken curry was terrible, no flavor or heat. The chicken tikka masala was overcooked and flavorless. The only decent curry was the veggie panir. All in all the food was terrible

I've only been to this location once. The other location is a little more comfortable to me. This location is a little fancy for the food that they serve. When you are seated you have a lovely table with metal glasses for water. The decoration is very nice and you feel a little regal. The menu is really big. Not big as in long list of items, but big as in size. They serve you some kind of rice/chickpea fried cracker. I forgot the name of it but man, it was salty! I didn't like that but I was looking forward to having a good snack here. I ordered enough for four people: 2 orders of Bhel Puri- crisp puffed rice salad with a tamarind chutney This has always been a really good snack for me. The crunchiness of the rice puffs with the sweet/sour tamarind chutney. I can devour this in minutes if I had this at home. 1 order of a giant Mysore Masala Dosa- it's a spicy chickpea/lentil crepe. Filled with potatoes and spices. It comes with coconut chutney and another chutney that I cannot remember the name of. This is my favorite dosa. Spicy but it cools down with the coconut chutney. Don't be afraid to use your hands! They also have a location in South Jordan. Try that as well

Had my birthday dinner here with the Mrs.; pleased to have a new entrant in the Top Three Indian Restaurants Club. (In SLC, at least; definitely top 5-ish nationally, for me). We got the Panir Vegetable Medley Dosa*, Vegetable Biryani**, Naan & Dips***, and Saag Paneer****. *first time trying this dish - interesting and looking forward to trying it again but with something different inside **we've been wanting to cook a fancy briyani at home, but now I think we can just keep getting takeout from Saffron ***so many delicious dips!!! omg -- also this was more than enough naan for 2 people given what we ordered ****personal fave of mine right now - can't go without the cheeeeeeeeese ^^^all of the above cost us ~$60 after tip including 2 beers; more than 2 days worth of good eating Service was great (although I sort of felt like I was being pressured to order WAY more food than could ever be consumed by 2 people in a reasonable amount of time), and the ambiance is very nice and clean (I remember when it used to be a Chinese restaurant years ago but never ate there). Definitely would recommend. I'd also recommend checking the menu beforehand and getting and idea of what you want.

Love this place for Indian buffet! Especially the mutton soup tastes great!

I hate the Indian places where food is terrible and they claim to be authentic Indian. Saffron is a perfect example of bad Indian food. Bhel puri has more sev than bhel; Delhi chaat is the worst dish with more yogurt than chat ingredients; chai has no flavor. I encourage the management to come to Bay Area or New Jersey to at least get a sense of what Indian food means!

I don't always eat Indian food, but when I do, I eat at Saffron Valley. The food here is amzingly stupendous! The portions are very generous, so there's always enough to take home for later. The combo platter (sorry, I forget what they call it), is phenomenal. It has paneer, along with several kinds of meat and the most fantastic shrimp I've had anywhere. The roasted veggies and salad make it one of my favorite dishes in SLC. The service is good and the atmosphere is very nice. They have a good wine selection and several beers to choose from at reasonable prices. I love this place!

Awesome food! We were passing through SLC and we're looking for a quick dinner. Loved the biryani and the dosa!

I have eaten Indian food all over the world. This is as good as it comes. The lamb Saag was extrodinary. We ordered it "fire", it was perfect. The spice was balanced across the mouth and enhanced the flavor. The Onion Rava Dosa was like an Indian potatoe pancake. Rich flavors and fun to eat. Not necessarily a negative, but be aware that the garlic naan has VERY strong garlic taste. I love garlic, but some people may find it too much. The physical space is utilitarian but did not detract from the experience. Our waiter was knowledable and attentive. The food comes out as it is ready, which I prefer, I would rather have it on my table than sitting on the pass. If you are in Salt Lake City I hightly recommend Saffron Valley. Close to downtown but a little off the beaten path. Just beyond easy walking distance from most of the hotels.

We went to saffron valley today because I had remember being there before. The place has such a great environment. It literally looked like a house, but when you step inside it turned into a restaurant. We had the mango lasi and it was super delicious. It isn't too sweet and there is a huge mango taste to it. The garlic nan had cheese in it...it was super unique. We ordered Bryani, butter chicken, Tika masala, and chicken tandoori...they were all good but the reason I gave this place three stars is that the food took forever to come out. By the time we had our main course we were all full from finishing our mango lasi. Another thing is that one of my friend tried getting a refill in his water and told two waiters, none of them got it for us, until we waved down a third waiter that left the pitcher for us in the end. Some of the waiters are very snobby. There is a very nice lady that joked with us and was super friendly...I think she is the owner of the place or something. I will come back here again to give it another chance to update my review and maybe give better stars.

This place is very hit or miss for me. I've been plenty of times and honestly will most likely go again. It's location is super convenient for me and it almost never has a long wait. The inside is decorated well and is super clean. This is their second location: the first one is in South Jordan. Their menu is quite substantial and has a large variety ranging from street to south to north Indian food. I personally prefer their south Indian and street food dishes more than their north Indian ones. So far my go to's at this restaurant include: plain dosa, masala dosa, manchurian dosa, pani poppers (pani puri), and their paneer tikka I do think their buffet is one of the bests in the valley. They have a lot of dishes that are both vegetarian and non vegetarian. They have an awesome salad/sauce/chutney station which adds so much to the experience.

This is a quaint little place in a quiet neighborhood. The restaurant is in the building of an old Japanese restaurant so the building looks very much so like the previous occupant. The grounds are pretty cool. The interior is well kept and a great environment, the tableware is very cool in itself (cool metal cups and water pitchers). The food definitely surpasses any of the aforementioned details. I had a variety of dishes, including naan, dosas, karaokudi chicken, samosas (not the drink), some chicken tikka, and a few other dishes. The chicken was extremely moist and soft, perfectly well done. The sauces were expertly spiced. You can't go wrong with any of the options I listed above. The service was terrific! They were both pleasant and attentive. Many in my party were affirming that Saffron Valley was the best Indian they had tried in SLC.

Bomb Indian food. Went to their Sunday afternoon lunch buffet, and I was very pleased. The chicken in the tikka masala was a little tough (probably because they're cooked in bulk for a buffet, so understandable), but the sauce was easily the best tikka masala sauce I've ever had! All the other dishes were fantastic as well. Plus, who doesn't love endless Indian food?

Wow! Amazing food, amazing service, amazing locale. Highly, highly recommend. The restaurant is beautiful, the staff are very, very friendly! My niece started crying so they brought her a Reese's. Delicious and decently priced. I would go again tomorrow. And the next day. And the next day

Indulge me, as there are a few moving parts here. Ordered take out: Spicy Chicken Vindelou, rice and garlic nann. My introduction to Indian food came in the UK. The Vindelou I had there was thicker and browner than the thinner orange sauce served here. Regional versions can vary in style, so I get that. Tasted pretty good, but not what I had hoped for. Rice was fine and nann was very good. Since I ordered take out, my encounter with the staff was brief but friendly, as they genuinely seemed happy to see me leave. The dining experience was also mixed. The building was one of those generic brick places that litter downtown. The hallway smelled of a mostly pleasant "blunt - like" aroma. Seating was futon style with a friendlyish dog seated next to me who stared longingly the entire meal. Not bad overall, but the roll of toilet paper, bag of dog food and mostly empty jug of vodka (IN PLAIN VIEW) was a bit of a downer. On the plus side, the server seemed to know what I wanted at the very instant I wanted it. Solid! In conclusion, Food - 3 stars, Ambiance - 2 stars, Service - 4 stars (nobody gets a 5!)

They spilled two drinks on me, not one but two. They forgot my starter and main course (as well as another member of the group) then had the audacity to hand me a bill! The worst service I've ever experienced. The servers were like something from a Monty Python movie. It was actually funny it was so bad. I fully expected them to offer to pay my dry cleaning bill or a comp dinner. But no; instead they handed me a bill and included a gratuity for the entire table. Lets recap, they poured two drinks on me, i didn't get any dinner and they handed me a bill with a tip pre calculated on it. Bring your sense of humor to this place, you'll need it.

Holy Moly!!! Yes, I just gave my first 5 star review to Saffron Valley East Indian! EXCEPTIONAL!! Had paneer Domas, Lamb coconut korma and the saag paneer and alll of it was heavenly. You will NOT go wrong here! I'll be back :-)

Walked into the most pleasant atmosphere ever felt . Definitely is the epitome of the reason 5 stars was created . Leads you on a journey around the world culture of what India truly feels and tastes like. The saffron is truly Saltlakes best Indian adventure in food ,ever tasted.

I've been on the lookout for a great India restaurant in Utah for a while, and I think I've found my spot. We ordered samosas and pani poppers to start--both were solid choice but the tamarind water that you pour over the pani poppers was a little more eclectic than I anticipated. Probably won't order that one again. As for entrees, I ordered the coconut korma curry and others in my group ordered the manchurian dosa, and the madras medley dosa. The curry was excellent but I'll probably go back this week to order a dosa. The crepe like texture covered in all the incredible spices and vegetables, then dipped into yogurt sauce made me realize, I think I could eat good Indian food like this for the rest of my life.

Chicken Biryani w/ yogurt riata. Enough said. It all started when my coworker from India brought me some of her leftovers. It was definitely love at first bite and I was definitely craving it less than 24 hours later. An order was placed the day after. Service: Slow delivery. Order an hour or two ahead of time if requesting delivery for a group of 10. They've historically taken at least an hour longer than their estimated time. Food: I highly recommend their Biryani (chicken/egg @ medium spice). I'm not a fan of their curries so if that's what you're craving, you should probably go elsewhere. Veggie samosas are also good... but you can't really go wrong with samosas :). Drafted this review about 4 months ago. Had the Biryani again a few weeks ago and it didn't taste the same for some reason. It was lacking flavors from the cloves and spices. Changing from 4 to 3 stars due to inconsistency of taste.

I recently spent 5 days in Salt Lake City on Business - while I don't usually write reviews on businesses that I haven't visited at least 2 or 3 times, since it's doubtful I'll be back (or if so that I'll hit the same restaurant) I thought I would provide some general opinions. I loved Saffron Valley - truly exceptional. Apparently the location in SLC was recently opened (they have another restaurant in South Jordan) - this one is on E Street near the heart of the city. The building appears to originally have been erected for a Northern Asian restaurant - the style is more Japanese with the pagoda-like roof. The interior has some Nuevo-modern flair with a large dining area - stairs to the right takes you to some private dining (I didn't ascend so no clue what's going on up there) and that might make for an interesting group meal. A bit more upscale, this restaurant had cloth napkins and provides a water-carafe at the table. There seems to be a decent wine selection but I did not partake. We started with some naans which I found very good except for the garlic naan - I guess I'm used to something a bit different as a light sprinkling of garlic powder seemed to be weak in execution (locally in Atlanta the garlic naan is typically pungent and full of fresh garlic and herbs). I ordered the Madras Curry extra spicy - it was good but could have used a bit more heat. The basmati rice was excellent. I finished up with the bengali rasmalai - this is a dessert you don't commonly see (seems everyone has the gulab jamun and kheer) made from milk - nice to see this Calcutta-local food, well executed and not-too-sweet. Parking is a bit tight in the private lot, you may need to park on the street (if you can). If I come back to SLC I'm definitely trying Saffron Valley again.

We order food from here all the time for lunch for work. They are always really great in the sense that they will deliver the food for free. What's really awesome is that they also are very generous with their portions, although if you get the goat Breonna me, I think there is more bones and meat on that so don't get that one. I've had a bunch of the car use like the coconut korma and the butter chicken masala. Also love getting their lamb Briyani. When I've been there, the service has been pretty dang good, and they seem to be really friendly with children too. If you want some good Indian food, especially South Indian food, I would highly recommend this place.

I love Indian food, and this is one of my go to places in Salt Lake. One of the reasons for that is the endless dosa and buffet nights. Their buffet on those nights usually differs from other indian buffets around here by having more southern indian options. It also does not hurt that you can eat as much as you want and order as many dosas as you please. Their lunch buffet is good as well though much more common. I would recommend you try the carrot dessert gajar halwa. It is very unique and not often offered at many other restaurants. The atmosphere is nice ( one tv is often on some american channel, and the other playing some bollywood). The servers are friendly. The overall experience is pleasant.

This is my new go-to place for Salt Lake City delivery! I can order online, pay with credit card or paypal, and I get fantastic food. My group ordered the Onion Rava Masala, Vindaloo, Malabar, and the Saffron Mixed Platter. The Onion Rava Masala was delicious... slightly sweet that paired very well with the other spicy dishes. The Vindaloo and the Malabar was both excellent although they could have been spicier for my taste (I did order the extra spicy). I must pay special attention to the Vindaloo as it was excellent and it is difficult to find here in Salt Lake. The Saffron Mixed Platter was good but not exactly what I was expecting. It came with a side salad, some cooked veggies, and a variety of proteins. Tasted good but I probably will not order it again. I was very impressed with my first taste here and I will absolutely be back to try more.

Love Saffron Valley, I have been to both locations and the taste of the food is consistent. My family grew up in India so we are picky when it comes to Indian food. We love the street food here, especially the pani puri and the Delhi chaat, I guess these could be considered snacks or an appetizer. I always get either the masala dosa or the chicken tikka masala. The prices for both are fair and both taste good. I love the paratha, aloo and gobi, but I think they overcharge for this item compared to other restaurants. Their food is great and I enjoyed the variety of food at the buffets as well. Saffron Valley is the perfect place to get yourself into trying Indian food.

The food here is okay. It's not amazing but there are a lot of vegetarian options on the lunch buffet. I found most of them to be somewhat bland though. sometimes I find Indian food to be so spicy I can't eat it but there was nothing with spice or much flavor at all on the buffet. A little disappointing for Indian food. My hopes were too high.

We popped into Safforn Valley for one dinner, and were genuinely and pleasant surprised, The decor is contemporary, modern and minimalist. Indian restaurants are serial offenders when it comes to tacky decor, but Saffron Valley delivers a fresh atmosphere, uncluttered and elegant in which to enjoy your meal. The service is exceptional. We called the chef for suggestions , he was very kind and patient to answer us and suggest us according to our taste. His suggestions turned out to be pretty interesting combo and tasty. We were well serviced by both our waiter and the manager, the food came out promptly. Our waiter was particularly good, managing to be attentive without overbearing, friendly without being obsequious. The food itself was excellent. We asked for Delhi chaat and the vegetable samosas for starters with a Calcutta fish salad., and the Lamb biriyani and Karikudi Chicken for our mains and few butter Naans for the side. The dishes came out quickly, the flavours were bold and intense, and the spiciness was perfectly balanced and contrasted with the butteriness of the naans. The Rasamalai for the dessert was fitting finish to the course. Yummy . Just melted . I even salivate now when I write :-))) Saffron Valley was overall great and value for money. The ambiance, food and the service made the dinner worth . Amazing Experience.

We went to Saffron Valley for dinner during there Festival of Lights week where they had an additional special menu for regal dishes. I ordered a lamb sauté which was presented as multiple little dishes on the one plate. The sautéed lamb was so flavorful it just burst flavors in your mouth as you ate it. I like how they suggest wines to go with various proteins on their menu. It can be hard to choose a wine to compliment indian food as the spices overpower the wine.

I didn't get my regular vindaloo which I normally get at indian restaurants. Instead I got the goat birayanni. The portions are GIGANTIC! I swear they gave me 3 lbs of food! We got the food delivered to downtown and it took about 45 mins, not bad. The naan was actually small, not much garlic, and extra chewy. However my rice was good and the goat was cooked perfectly. It was tender to the point where the ligaments came off the bone! I would probably suggest this place as an eat in or pick up, b/c I think the quality went down a little since delivery takes so long.

I love this place! I went there for take-out and the staff was really friendly and even gave me a free drink while I was waiting. The food is delicious and I recommend the Hyderabadi chicken biryani. So sad it's closed on Monday's though

What I tried: chicken tikka wrap, dahi puri, saag panir, lamb coconut korma, and gulab jamun Everything was delicious but my favorites were the chicken tikka wrap and the saag panir because the chicken was really juicy (I can't stand dry chicken) and any dish with panir is my favorite dish. I've tried gulab jamun at many different Indian restaurants and I have to say this one was the best. The consistency was perfect and it was just sweet enough. Saffron valley also has a branch in South Jordan which is much closer to me so I will going to that one to fulfill my Indian food cravings!

Absolutely love their food. Service usually good. Nice avenue location. Ambience is so so. Wish it were brighter and cheery like their south Jordan location. The Japanese pagoda building is also weird.

This place has sadly, in my opinion- gone way downhill. I ordered a dosa to go a while ago and it tasted like it had been in the fridge for at least a day before I picked it up. Such a disappointment. Also they refuse to make the food spicy even when it says it's spicy on the menu. I like my food to be really hot especially if it's supposed to be. Just because I'm not Indian doesn't mean I don't appreciate spicy food! I would give it 2 stars but I think the ambience is very nice and I do like the people that work there.

So if you go to Indian restaurants for service look elsewhere, funny to read the reviews. Indians are not known for service or to say thank you. However, I have to admit the service here was great! It was early but they were attentive to our water, food and also refilled our sambar for our dosas we ordered! We ordered the Delhi Chaat, Idli, and Mysore masala dosa - although our Delhi Chaat didn't have chick peas, it was decent. I wish it were slightly spicier. The Idli is on point and good. The best were the masala dosa - delicious! My gosh they were not oily and the filling was great! I know I will be back here and surely enjoy the laid back ambience. I just wish the coconut chutney didn't feel watered down.

Okay, I might be a little hangry right now BUT worst place ever. I haven't even tried their food because I ordered it almost 2 hrs ago and it never arrived and they called to say it's going to be a while longer but they would love to give me half off! Oh, how kind of you, no thank you. I work in the restaurant industry and so I get it when things go wrong but this whole situation is unacceptable.

I came here for the festival this past weekend, and I loved it! Everyone's very nice there...I'm a huge fan. I really enjoyed the huge selection of food they have also! Personally, I've really enjoyed their battered mushroom appetizers (can't remember the name) and their chicken curry with rice! The rice is so aromatic and I love the soft texture of it all. It goes so well with the chicken curry..The chicken was succulent, tender, and flavorful. It' got to the point where I was so full, but I kept wanting a second bite! I'll definitely try their South Jordan location in the future as well. Anyway, I'll update again when I've tried it a couple more times.

We ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and Saag Panir with medium spice, naan, Gulab Jamun, and mango lassi for a take-out order. They were super nice over the phone and the order was ready when we arrived. It was a weekday evening and there was maybe one other group dining in the restaurant, so we were taken care of quickly at the register. I love Indian food, and I would say this is very yummy, though not the best I've ever tasted. My biggest criticism would be that the flavors weren't as intense as some other Indian places I have been, both in Salt Lake and in other cities. The blend of spices were balanced and tasted great, they just weren't quite as strong as I would have liked. The sauce wasn't as thick as some I've tried, but I liked the consistency. The medium spice was more like the mild spice I've had at other restaurants, so I think next time I'll order it the next level up. The panir in the saag panir was terrific, a good mild taste and quite smooth. I'd never had Gulab Jamun before and it was really delicious. It came warm and I ordered it with vanilla ice cream, which was a great combo. The cardamom flavors were evident without being overpowering and the texture of the milky inside of the balls were really good. I would definitely eat at Saffron Valley again, though I do wish the flavor of their sauces was a little more intense.

I came in and was immediately greeted and sat. The staff was friendly and accommodating. My water was never left empty and someone was always around in case I needed anything. They offer a buffet style dining that was fresh and delicious as well a menu to order from. Our food was out in a timely manner and was hot & fresh! This restaurant offers cooking classes for a great price and dinner is included afterward. They have great locations and we will be coming in regularly.

This is one of the best variety of Indian food. Nice and traditional although a cool ambiance, amazing thing is about their bills. They bring bill in some or other book that talks about culture, history of India. Such a unique way to let people aware about Indian culture.

Real close to home and they even do delivery for the days I'm feeling extra lazy. The food has always been consistent and the atmosphere is nice. Pricing fair. There aren't many choices when it comes to good quality Indian food but saffron is definitely on my list of favorites. Thanks for the awesome service!

I am writing first review to this place because I came back from their amazing lunch buffet! Needless to say, it was very very very good! And $11.99 on Saturday? Now that's what I'm talking about! They had a wide variety of dishes, gosh I can't remember what they have exactly a potato dish, a spinach dish, butter chicken, another chicken dish, rice, a lentil dish, and maybe two more. I know that doesn't help very much, but I can't think right now because I am too full. LOL. They do have a "mini salad" bar, they just have a bowl vegetables, a bowl of green salad, and a bowl of pani puri counter. I think they have 4 different items to choose from. But waiter explain about how to make pani puri then he explain how to eat that.its very helpful for us . That day is a super nice day! And it was too busy at all, Service was good, I love how I ask for water and they automatically bring you a lemon in it :). Also they bring you some bread, the flat bread, or I think Naan...both waiter clear our used plates when i went for new plate.they refill the water often. Anyways, LOVE this buffet! Will come again around the same time, 1:00-2:00, and have some more yummy food!

Absolutely adore this food. Have eaten Indian all over the world - including East and South India and they are absolutely amazing. I love that they have dosa! And if you go to the buffet they bring you a fresh dosa - brilliant. The buffet changes frequently and has an interesting variety of dishes minus the usual oil soaked blah curries you find at lesser Indian restaurants. Tip - go for buffet or take out because sit down dinner service is seriously hit or miss. You may leave hangry if you are dining in without the buffet option.

Enjoyed a delicious lunch today. Sampled a little bit of everything ... from the street food starters to curry and biryanis. Excited to have a Saffron Valley location more conveniently located. The ambiance and decor are unique and a step or two (or three) up from the South Jordan location. Enjoyed reading some of the framed pieces - they made me laugh! Look forward to returning to try the Express Lunch as well as the Wine & Chai Bar. Lavanya and her staff were so gracious. I'm confident a couple of minor opening day kinks will be worked .. to be expected when a new restaurant opens.

I like the ambiance and the spaciousness of this new location in the Avenues and while the quality of the food is not quite as good as Bombay House, they make up for it through innovatively themed food festivals featuring different regional Indian Cuisines, eye catching Facebook ads and other forms of enterprising marketing and general hustle. A couple of months ago I took my cousin who was visiting us from out of town to a Sunday lunch buffet based on this restaurant's Facebook page ad mentioning that there will be an authentic Lucknowi themed lunch. He was very excited as he likes Lucknowi food and the ad listed all the usual Lucknow favorites, around 10 of them. Upon arriving there though we were quite disappointed as only a couple of items from the original list had made it to the buffet. On asking why this was the case, one of the employees informed us that since mostly "whites" frequent the Avenues location unlike the South Jordan location, they had only a couple of the Lucknowi dishes and that the South Jordan location does indeed have all of them. A quick glance of the place though, revealed otherwise as about 80% of the customers were Indian/Asian. Anyway, if this is going to be the case it would help if this could have been mentioned in the Ad. We would have planned accordingly. This unpleasant experience notwithstanding, I will give this place another try. Hoping for a better experience next time.

One of the first places I would and do recommend to anyone who likes Indian food. Especially the buffet! :)

Their lunch buffet comprises a sumptuous spread, and is totally value for money! Their a la carte menu has some interesting south indian recipes, which you don't find in any other indian restaurant in salt lake city!

This is my favorite and I have been a fan and customer since their South Jordan location! Love coming here with my girls and good friends! They also have a family dining room for special parties and or events! The service here is and always has been amazing as with the food! :)

Authentic Indian restaurant with modern decor, great menu and very attentive wait staff. Food was great - we had 2 curries medium spicy AND flavorful. Had the best naan I've had in years. Nice to see a good reuse fit for a historic neighborhood restaurant.

The lunch buffet was very tasty. Also have had the chicken tikka masala and garlic cheese naan for dinner and it was super good as well. If your in the avenues area its a definite must try!

I had a catering order for my son's first bday party. We are new to this place so just went by the reviews for this place. And amazingly it turned out to be a wonderful choice. The food was really yummy, everyone liked it, the best were cutlets. All other items are equally good. Will go back some day for lunch buffet. Recommend the place for catering services. Thanks Saffron Valley, SLC.

I absolutely love Saffron Valley in South Jordan so I was excited to see something a little bit closer. I went for the first time about a month after they opened up and as many said, there were some kinks. But I've been back since then and most of it has been worked out. I'm glad they kept the grounds the same as Pagoda had some beautiful landscaping. Though it doesn't fit in with the Indian "theme" it's still quite lovely. They have transformed the inside and I like what they've done with it. The downstairs gets a little warm during big events but it's nice to know that they can host events. Let's talk food since this is their shining star. I think one of my favorite dishes is saag. It's usually somewhat like a thickened creamed spinach. When I tried the saag panir at Saffron Valley, wow. I was blown away. It's different than any other I've had. I don't even know how to explain it. Just get it. If you're a lamb fan, (and even if you're not a huge fan), try it. I'm not generally a huge lamb fan; it's a little too gamey for my taste most of the time. But this place knows how to do it right. I've had both the lamb coconut korma as well as the lamb chops. Yum. The meat is tender and so flavorful. If you're scared of trying lamb but you're intrigued. Try it in a curry first. You won't be disappointed. The service could still use a little more work. The wait staff is very kind, don't get me wrong. But sometimes things feel a bit slow. The few times I've gone, I've had to wait awhile to get my bill. It wouldn't be a big deal if it was busy but when I'm one of 4-5 tables in the whole restaurant... But at least they're nice! Oh one last thing and it's really just a preference thing. I like it hot. So spicy. And usually Indian food can get really spicy. But even after requesting it hot and getting extra hot sauce, it's still just not hot enough for me. But I'd rather give up the spiciness than good flavor so it's just a note. Go. And say hi to the lovely owner, Lavanya. She's a gem.

  • Zach L.

Very good flavors. Their chicken tikka, naan, curries, and kabobs were excellent. Try to go when they have a belly dancer (is that every night?), since you'll love the entertainment. Enjoyed their basmati rice too. All in all a good place. So why not five stars? The food isn't quite spicy enough, but I was certainly satisfied.

  • K Lo ..

Overall 3.5 stars. Wether you like Indian food or not, you got to try this place. It has a decent size menu of things one would crave in an Indian menu. Street food, Indo- Chinese, Indian bread and Indian spicy pancakes. A little pricey, but a good splurge if you cannot make it at home. Ambience resonates with the theme and their plates and for once friendly waiters in an Indian restaurant.

I was very happy to hear that Lavanya was opening a second location downtown. I loved Saffron Valley down south, but was never able to make it down there as often as I had wished. We visited the first time right after they had opened and had the express lunch. It was wonderfully presented and served and the food was delicious and the service perfect. The 2nd visit was equally tasty with great service again. Welcome downtown and to the Avenues Saffron Valley! I hope you stay a very long time! Food this good is hard to find.

As a fan of the Saffron Valley location in South Jordan, I was happy to see this location open in the Avenues. I've eaten here a few times and am double happy to say that it's delightful. For devotees of the SoJo locale, know that this is something different. At this (much) larger location you'll find a much more expansive menu, and true sit-down dining. As you enter, go upstairs and you'll be greeted and seated at the table of your choice. There's also a bar area towards the rear. Here the menu covers a wide array of Indian foods. You go from tandoor goods like kebabs to the harder-to-find dosas, and even venture into Indio-Chinese territory with a few select noodle dishes. They're very focused on the spices here, and you can tell by the care with which dishes are selected and knowingly seasoned that the owner has a background in spice sales. I've enjoyed every dish I've had. I haven't tried the dosas, but I'm not a huge fan of them as a whole so I'll stick to the super savory kebabs, traditional dishes, curries, and other tasty treats. There's a private room downstairs that seats about 60-70 which has recently been redone and it's colorful and tastefully decorated. No gimmicks--just clean style and nice decor. Parking may fill up, but street parking is available. The parking lot is along the side and the rear of the building. If it looks like an Asian building, that's only because it is. This used to be Pagoda restaurant, so the building is decidedly Japanese in shape and form. I like that it's now and Indian food restaurant. Character, baby. Go for the delicious flavors, stay for the variety and friendly folks who run the place. It looks like they've worked out some of the service issues that are always present at new places and I've seen first hand just how much the owner cares about each and every guest.

This place is in my neighborhood and I am a fan. I think I am a fan partially because the restaurant previously occupying this space was terrible. But I have had some great meals here. We order take out pretty often from here, the inside isn't anything that you have to experience. But they make some B+ dishes. The chili cheese naan and the lamb biryani are solid choices. They also give you a small portion of their rice pudding - ish dessert which I find pretty good. Nothing crazy, but taste it if you get it for free. If you live in the Aves, try to go here and give it a chance. We need places like this to stay open (unlike the Chinese restaurant that previously was in this location)

My fav Indian restaurant in SLC. We were soooo excited that they opened a branch closer to downtown. My hubby and I eat here at least once a week. Their buffets are pretty good but we usually end up coming here for dinner. My recommendations - chicken 65, karaikudi chicken, madras curry, pepper kadhai. Their dosas are really good. They have dosa night every tuesday - unlimited dosa and buffet spread. Definitely try! Their biryani is absolutely amazing and one of the best ever. For your sweet tooth, warm gulab jamun - yum yum yum!

The chicken tikka masala is probably the best I've had. It's a little sweeter and spicier than I find other places and is probably loaded with coconut milk. So good. I like their wraps too.

So my gal and I attended the yelp event last night and I must say that we really enjoyed ourselves. Not only was it a huge event with a lot of yelpers, but it was also great trying something a little different. The restaurant itself could use a little more polish, but overall it was nice. They could also use some additional parking, but they can't do much about that since the building has been there for years. The staff was friendly and did a great job serving the 65+ yelpers that attended the event. I would recommend clearing a dishes or two off the table before serving the next course, but it didn't bother me enough to worry about... And we continued to nibble on the Dahi Puri (incredible cold appetizer with a great yogurt sauce, we added it to almost everything we ate). Other than the Dahi Puri we also had a Chicken Tikki Wrap, which was also very tasty. It had good flavor and nothing was overpowering. We then moved on to the Kebab Sampler, Saag Panir & Lamb Coconut Korma. The Kebab (all of them), were delicious. The Saag was really tasty and a great option for the vegan crowd... But the lamb was killer. In fact I added the Saag and the lamb together and it was incredible... Add in the Nana and we really enjoyed ourselves. The belly dancing was entertaining as we're the tattoos.... We will be back the next time we are looking for something off the beaten path. Oh, and it's always nice seeing Jeffrey!

I was lucky enough to attend the Yelp Elite event here. I wasn't sure what to expect because I don't have any experience with Indian food. It turned out to be something I will definitely be trying again! The unique appetizers were delicious. By the main course, I was willing to try anything they brought me because I knew it'd be good! I tried lamb for the first time, and normally I wouldn't choose meat at all. It was great! The dessert was not my cup of tea, but it was prepared well and smelled lovely. I loved when the owner spoke to us, and it made me want to support her business. I'll definitely be back for more!

  • Youssef T.

We knew it was going to be good because it was full of Indians. The food is delicious, all of it. I've tasted most of it and it's all been really good. The buffet is very generous by any standards and unheard of by Indian standards. I was shocked that the entire menu including street food, appetizers and all the dishes are in the buffet!!!

  • Fast E.

This has the city's best Indian buffet. Compared to the Bombay House and Kathmandu, saffron valley's buffet has much more variety, and will have a selection of different and tasty items each time you go. Dinner quality is comparable to both Kathmandu and the Copper Bowl; service is fair, but they definitely want to keep the customers moving, to turn the tables.

Love this place! They're still working out the kinks with their service, but they did a cute soft remodel on the building, and it's great having some nice, affordable Indian food so close by. They have a vegetarian option for just about everything too! Thanks!

    (5)
  • Michelle K.

So I admit that they are still working out kinks in service (we were served a third entree that we didn't order. it wasn't an issue to send it back and we weren't charged, but it was sad to see the food go to waste). Also, we arrived mid-afternoon so we were pretty much the last table left before they closed until dinner service, so we probably got more attention than usual. Now that those qualifications have been stated, I will proceed with my review. Holy smokes, their food is delicious!! We ordered the Chicken 65 (tandoori chicken bites), Masala Medley (crepe with potatoes and shredded carrots/cabbage inside), and Tandoor chicken caesar salad (aptly named). The Chicken 65 was seasoned perfectly and each piece was very juicy. If you're a fan of Kyoto's chicken appetizer, you should try this one (and it's not deep fried so it's healthier). My Masala Medley was flavorful and came wrapped in an enormous crepe. The side veggie soup for crepe-dipping had a yummy broth and chunks of veggies, how I like it. The caesar was reportedly tasty and refreshing, but I didn't eat any so I can't offer more. Last but not least, loved the theme: the 1920's, British feel. So cool! And different from the other indian restaurants in town. Felt prices were appropriate for the quality and quantity of food served. We look forward to coming again!

  • Greg T.

decent Indian buffet for lunch. normal things like tikka, korma, paneer, etc. however all the dishes were a little old and had developed the layer of slime on the top that needed to be broken with stirring. the flavor was good. they could use some high octane heat lamps to keep the food warmer. I must be different, but I like my food HOT not warm. I will give it a second chance though. on the plus side I did see lots of Indian people come in.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. The open floor plan, the exceptional customer service, and the selection of fusion drinks and dishes add to the establishment's appeal. The food and drinks are consistently excellent, and the ambiance at the restaurant is ideal for a friendly get-together, a date, or a family dinner. I recommend Saffron Valley - East India Cafe to anyone who loves Indian food, as well as fusion dishes and drinks. The atmosphere will not disappoint, either. It is a must-try in the Valley.

This is a 3.5 mainly because of one surly server. The food is always good, but we constantly get stuck with him and he takes forever to warm up. Smile dude. Stop acting so annoyed. This is ALWAYS the case. When it changes, I'll change the review.

3.5 stars. My husband and I live in the area and have been to Saffron Valley twice for dinner. The saag paneer is too liquidy, the donut like appetizer was quite different, we also ordered the pakoras and it was very different from the ones I have ordered from other restaurants. It was more like a veggie tempura indian style. Both appetizers came with a variety of sauces which was good but I wouldn't order these appetizers again. We also ordered the tandoori chicken which was good. The rice portion was quite small for 2 people. The ambiance is nice and good taste of songs. Service was good and attentive. We forgot to show our coupon before we paid our bill so when we asked them if they could cancel that transaction to apply our coupon they were very apologetic but said they couldn't retrieve the check and would have to call some company which would have been time consuming. To us this was a weird excuse because I bet if we had noticed the bill was incorrect after we had paid (which weirdly has happened to us once at another restaurant but they were able to cancel the transaction) what would have they done? Tell us it was too late? I don't think so. They didn't want to help us out because they would have lost some money. Would go back again but only with a coupon they send to the neighborhood from time to time.

This was my first try of Indian food in the states, and I happened to catch their buffet. Let's just say, I've been back every Tuesday since. Not sure how exceptionally true to Indian cuisine it is, but I got to try almost everything and it was all good! A great deal and very helpful and nice wait staff. I have yet to try any of their cocktails there, but that bar was alluring...

I'm trying to be objective, but i have nothing but rave reviews for this place. it was gorgeous, for starters. i'm glad we got to dinner early (right after work) it seemed to be filling up fast. i tried new and exciting things. we ordered the pani puri, mysore masala dosa, cheese naan, captain's choice chai, and masala chai. i hope i can come back here and edit this review, this isn't saying much, and i have much to say. it was delish. my cup was never dry. i was happy.

This is based on my experience for a home delivery. I ordered Panir Schezuan Fried Rice and was surprised to find meat in it. Me, being a vegetarian, was taken aback and called them up to find out about the issue. Instead of apologizing for it, they question about the truth in it. The person I spoke to, over the phone, was adamant that this could not have happened and refused to acknowledge my complaint. Further, he tells me that the only reason he would believe any of that was if I go down to the restaurant and show him the food. This is the first time I am facing such an issue(where i get something else in the food- speaks volumes about their cleanliness) and also a management which refuses to believe their customers. One of the worst experiences with a food place.

Pretty good food but about the most terrible service I have ever had! I hope it was just an isolated incident but it took 20 minutes to even be acknowledged. They forgot the appetizer and after I received my entree and I sat there and waited for 10 minutes for my wife to be served. All of the tables around us were waiting and waiting....I am still waiting for my check! Not sure if I will be back and you shouldn't risk it with so many other great places to choose from. I was hoping for a better addition to our neighborhood. I wonder which restaurant will be next... ET

Best Indian lunch buffet in town hands down. Big selection and they switch it up so it's slightly different each time. The ambience of the place is great compared to other jndian restaurants and unlike the Kathmandu, I don't smell like Indian food when I leave :)

  • Chris S.

This is coming from an experience in take out only. I did not dine in. So maybe the experience would be different. Ordered the express lunch combo. Although it was tasty, the meat was very sparse and it seems they tried to make up for that fact with sauce that made it look more like soup. For $9.00 what did I pay for? Sauce sprinkled with a little bit of meat, rice, pita bread and some tempura. I work close by and was excited to see a new restaurant come in place of the Pagoda that was there before, but it looks like this will be yet another place that I do not make it to again...at least for takeout. Maybe I will try dining in and see if my attitude changes. But until then, adieu Saffron Valley Final conclusion: Overpriced & Overrated.

I don't get the yelp rating. This place is great! I got takeout from them tonight. Server was super friendly and order was received quickly and with everything. It's not the usual boring Americanized Indian standard menu. I had a hard time choosing! It was all so delicious! I had fish (yay for having fish option!) vindaloo, malabar paneer and mancherian dosa - they also threw in some soup - not sure that just comes with a meal or was a happy accident. All in all my belly is happily stuffed and I can't wait to eat the leftovers tomorrow!

I really Wanted to like the place . I REALLY WANTED TO . They had a nice selection of coffee and dessert and their lassi was delicious . I'm actually sitting writing a review instead of eating my chicken makhni curry . You see ? I asked for my curry spicy and the curry they bought me was not spicy . Indian Curry to me is milky and too buttery if it doesn't have a kick . When I asked my waiter for something spicier he just bought me siracha sauce . I don't want siracha in my curry because then it will taste just like siracha . It's disappointing to go out and eat curry when it's not spicy . I'm sorry saffron . You lost a customer who would have been a regular because you can't make your curry spicy .

I attended the Yelp night at this location . . . a few weeks ago now, and THIS is how long it's taken me to recover from the nirvana that was the food! That's slightly hyperbolic, but in all honesty, the atmosphere was fun and intimate, the waitstaff was friendly and helpful when we needed more chairs, more eatery, and more food, and the food itself was delicious. I'm not a huge indian food buff so take my review with a grain of salt, but for what it's worth, I would definitely go back to Saffron Valley for more gulab jamun or the chicken tikka wrap!

This place only gets a star because their food is decent. Their service and delivery is awful. After waiting 2 hours and 35 minutes the food arrive mediocre, cold, and with a yelling manager who was unhappy that I called her to tell her that it was unacceptable to tell patrons food would be there in 45-60 minutes and then get there nearly three hours late. They lied three times when I called to ask were our food was. Ordered at 7 and got it at 9:45pm. Not worth the wait, not worth the money, and for sure not worth the crappy service. I'm pretty sure they spit in the desert or there was something Lugee like In it! BEWARE go else where!!

Not worth the money. Food quality was really poor. Dahi vadas were so hard that my spoon got stuck in it and I had to ask for another spoon. Even after buying their buffet I walked out hungry

  • Todd D.

The flavor of the food off the buffet line was really good and there were some unique selections I hadn't seen on an Indian buffet. The one issue they need to deal with sooner than later is keeping the food hot. The manager even came and checked on us a couple of times and acknowledged the problem so presuming their going to make that fix this place is going to be an Indian go-to.

Some of the best indian food I've had, and maybe the best naan I've had. Service was very slow both times I ate here though, but nothing to complain about with the food.

This second location is quite different from their South Jordan locale. The avenue's spot is where Pagoda used to be - lovely atmosphere, very friendly staff. Just don't expect the amazing buffet for $10, so expect to pay a little more. The food is delicious, loved the spicy chicken vindaloo for lunch (and they're open on Sunday, always a plus around here!) - This spot would be perfect for a nice evening out or date.

On Friday April 19th we decided to give this place a try. I've eaten at just about every restaurant in downtown SLC and the SERVICE WAS TERRIBLE!!!! Not just for us but for every table around us. Most people had to go to the register to get their check and half of the tables had to flag down a server to find out what was going on with their food. (arrived at 7pm, left at 9:42pm) Our appetizer took a full hour to arrive at the table. Our entree took an hour and fourty-five minutes. The server never came back to our table after we ordered our wine. On the receipt his name was Lavanya, but I think that may have been the lady who allowed me to pay our bill. The HARDEST WORKING PERSON by FAR was the bus boy. This kid was running wild and we personally watched him save several people from walking out all together. I don't know his name but he was the white kid(hate to put it that way, but it's the only way to identify him from the rest). I offered him a job to come and work for me, that's how impressed I was with him. To top it off they never brought us our Naan. There was a "special group" that came in that seemed to get TOP priority in a room upstairs. Not sure what was going on there, but let's just say it seemed like they were family. If this is how you are going to run your restaurant, then plan on being around for a VERY SHORT PERIOD. I know many people in the business and many food critics who will SLAY you for this kind of service. GET IT TOGETHER!!!! Fix your service and you will have a chance at becoming an amazing Indian Restaurant. The food was exceptional, but not at the expense of the WORST SERVICE I've ever received...............

Don't be confused by the pagoda looking architecture, this place knows how to make some great Indian food. I attended the yelp event so the menu was set but everything we ate was great. I particularly liked the lamb coconut korma (entree) and the chicken tikka wrap (appetizer). I will definitely be returning

This one is hard to review. We've gone for dinner three times and our experiences were mostly negative. The service is bad. The tables are not cleaned on time. No one welcomes you at the entrance. All three times we went there, we had to stand awkwardly at the entrance for a few minutes before anybody noticed us. They seem understaffed. No one checked if we liked our food while we were dining. One time they didn't even ask how spicy we wanted our food. Issues: slow unprofessional service and just "okay" food. Nothing special. I have to say that when we complained about our order (it was made too spicy), the chef came to meet us and explained why it was made spicy. He attempted to change the dish and gave us a complimentary dessert at the end. He really tried to make it better. Since there are so many good Indian places in SLC, there is really no reason to come here.

Very tasty food, with a friendly staff, who is admittedly new and needed a little help to describe some dishes. The chicken tikka masala was the best of the mains we got, but the goat was also very good. We couldn't pick from the desserts, and ordered three of them. The kulfi and the golab - very good! Kumar was delightful and very helpful with the entire meal, especially dessert. I'll definitely go again.

I have been a few times. The food is always very good and the service (while sometimes a little slow) has been good and attentive as well. In fact, I asked for the soup I had had a few days before and it was brought out fairly quickly. I later found out that the manager had gone in the back and made it specially since they make different soups each day. I am impressed and happy the have their wine and beer license. I'm glad they are in the neighborhood.

Good food, and excellent service. Not only were they punctual in getting our party seated, the food was cooked on time and properly. At the end, I dropped my wallet on the way out, and they found and held it for a couple of days, after they made the effort to get in touch with me online. The cash inside was untouched, and they turned down my offer of a reward.

My wife and I had dinner here on April 19. First of all, this place is much better than the Pagoda that had this location for many years prior. Second, the food is excellent. My wife had a lentil and rice crepe filled with veggies and I had the vindaloo curry with chicken. Both were excellent and the portions were large enough to have a little leftovers for lunch--still excellent the next day! Where the restaurant needs a little work, and it is a common problem for many new restaurants, is the service. Everyone was friendly enough, but things felt a little off. Walking in, there is a sign that instructs you to seat yourself. The place was busy and only had three open tables, so my wife and I headed for one of them. We were quickly intercepted and directed to sit at one not already reserved. OK, but confusing--reservations and seat yourself don't mix well. We placed our orders and the food took a while to come out. It was not overly long, but long enough that we started wondering about it. Once served, no one checked on us to ask if everything was okay or if we wanted more of something (ahem, mango lassi refill, please?). We waived down someone for the check and it was handled promptly. Little things only, so it takes away a star. That said, we will definitely be back and hope that the service improves in time.

Welcome to the neighborhood. Dinner was great. I brought my two kids and the service was very accommodating going well out of their way to create a great experience. The food is authentic and well done, although not the best indian I've had. That said, we're really excited they're here. The kids loved it so much, they wanted to go back the next day for take out. Bottom line...decent food, great service, solid value.

Wow! Amazing food, amazing service, amazing locale. Highly, highly recommend. The restaurant is beautiful, the staff are very, very friendly! My niece started crying so they brought her a Reese's. Delicious and decently priced. I would go again tomorrow. And the next day. And the next day

  • Kasen W.

This place has sadly, in my opinion- gone way downhill. I ordered a dosa to go a while ago and it tasted like it had been in the fridge for at least a day before I picked it up. Such a disappointment. Also they refuse to make the food spicy even when it says it's spicy on the menu. I like my food to be really hot especially if it's supposed to be. Just because I'm not Indian doesn't mean I don't appreciate spicy food! I would give it 2 stars but I think the ambience is very nice and I do like the people that work there.

  • Laura B.

Real close to home and they even do delivery for the days I'm feeling extra lazy. The food has always been consistent and the atmosphere is nice. Pricing fair.

  • Julee A.

ET

Best Indian lunch buffet in town hands down. Big selection and they switch it up so it's slightly different each time. The ambience of the place is great compared to other jndian restaurants and unlike the Kathmandu, I don't smell like Indian food when I leave :)

  • Harmony S.

Love this place! They're still working out the kinks with their service, but they did a cute soft remodel on the building, and it's great having some nice, affordable Indian food so close by. They have a vegetarian option for just about everything too! Thanks!
